Pfizer expansion in Portage to bring 450 new jobs, $465-million investment
Lansing, Mich. — The Good Jobs for Michigan Coalition issued the following statement after the Michigan Strategic Fund today voted to approve the first use of the state’s newest job attraction tool – the Good Jobs for Michigan Program.
“Pfizer’s new state-of-the art pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Southwest Michigan is exactly the type of transformational project this latest tool was designed to attract – with hundreds of good-paying jobs and opportunities for Michiganders that will also help bolster communities, advance quality of life and build a strong, resilient economy for current and future generations.
“Beyond that, it helps position our state as a bio and life sciences sector leader. That’s the kind of smart, strategic investment that will help provide lasting benefits and continued, economic stability and growth for the region and our state and all who live, work and call it home.”
The company is planning to construct a new, 400,000-square-foot sterile drug manufacturing facility in the city of Portage. The project is expected to generate a total private investment of $465 million and create 450 jobs over the next several years. Average income for the new positions ranges from $70,100 to $93,300. The Good Jobs for Michigan Program is performance-based – no incentive is allowed until the company meets the minimum job and wage threshold required. Plus, job numbers must be verified every year until the incentive expires.
